Book Review: Celebrity by Melinda de Ross

Celebrity Cover

Title: Celebrity
Author: Melinda de Ross
Genre: Contemporary romance
Within twenty-four hours, Kendra Kensington’s life changes drastically. She lands a million dollar contract for her latest novel, now on the road to becoming a movie, catches her boyfriend in bed with another woman, and decides to move across the country from Chicago to California. But the City of Angels harbors more demons than she had imagined.
When she meets Blake Tyler, the famous movie star she’s secretly crushed on for years, she thinks her attempt to rebuild her life may just be on the right track. However, the past and the present seem to be conspiring against her and happiness may be harder to achieve than she thinks.

When Melinda asked me do I want to review her next book, Celebrity, I accepted it with my both hands wide open. I love her works and her writing style and I knew I won’t be disappointed this time.

I was captured from the first page. I know the book that was mentioned in ‘Celebrity’ so it wasn’t hard for me to understand and grasp what was behind. I didn’t have any picture behind two main characters in Kendra’s book that was made into a book.

Kendra moves to LA on her own but she has a support of her agent and soon, she meets friends as well. I liked how Kendra just took the matter in her own hands; for example, buying and renovating house completely. She even gets a dog and a boyfriend, that is a popular actor. Don’t get me wrong, it is not at all the cliche love story. They have ups and downs and the good thing about it is that Blake, her boyfriend, talks to her about it. He is down to earth and does his best to understand Kendra (after he gets her talking). He understands that Kendra’s past wasn’t easy, as well that she needs to overcome dating an actor.

To be honest, I’ve thought that she will end up with Danny, her agent, and at the beginning I didn’t like the Blake guy. Why?! I don’t know myself. I just had a bad feeling about him and wanted her to end up with Danny. But as I’ve met Blake more, my feelings towards him changed.

SPOILER (+TW):
There is one scene in my head that has struck me; it was where Kendra was on the party and Danny is there as well. He is drunk and he takes her to the room where he almost rapes her but she is saved by Blake. While reading this scene, I’ve had two thoughts in my mind;
1) this is the first time I’m reading a scene like this in contemporary romance and we seriously need more books where this happens if just for the girls to recognize it (I wish that NO ONE EVER comes in situation like this)
2) How did Melinda even came to an idea like this?

All in all, I really loved the book! It was a quick and interesting read; the read that’s not only about the love and relationship but has it’s own depth in it. A big plus right there!

I’m bringing you exclusive interview with Melinda:

  1. First of all, can you shortly introduce yourself to the readers?

My pen name is Melinda De Ross and I’m an international author of Romanian origin. I write in two languages, primarily English, and I try to lend my books the elegance specific to the European style, as well as the modern appeal of the American culture.

I have a law degree and have been a professional target shooter for over a decade. My favorite genre to read and write in is Romance, and anytime I’m given the choice, I prefer watching a classic movie instead of going to a noisy club. My favorite things in the world are my husband, books and chocolate – in that order. J

I also love to hear from readers all over the world, and you can find me at:

  1. How did you start to write and became an author?

The story about the beginnings of my writing career is quite long and complicated. I’ve told it so many times over the years, that I had to trim quite a lot of it. But basically, writing started as a form of therapy for me, when I was going through a very hard period in my early-to-mid-twenties. I had been working as a journalist since I was 18, but never had I thought of becoming a fiction writer, until one day when I had to make a choice and find a purpose in my life. From that moment, I knew writing was not only my passion, but my lifetime career. Ever since then, it’s been a struggle to improve, grow, and discover myself as an author.

  1. What is your favorite book you’ve written and why is that sort of a ‘Must Read’?

Wow, this is a tough one! I love all of my books, of course, but from a critical, self-improving point of view, I would say my favorite book is THE PLOT, a suspense romance that tackles sensitive issues like human trafficking, and is basically the love story between an ex-prostitute and a high-class thief. Not your average Pretty Woman style, more like a combo of Leaving Las Vegas and Memoirs of a Geisha. How can that not be a must-read? 🙂

  1. Can you tell us more about your newest book, CELEBRITY? How would you describe it?

I loved writing Celebrity, and I think I pretty much hit the perfect formula for contemporary romance. This is the blurb:

Within twenty-four hours, Kendra Kensington’s life changes drastically. She lands a million dollar contract for her latest novel, now on the road to becoming a movie, catches her boyfriend in bed with another woman, and decides to move across the country from Chicago to California. But the City of Angels harbors more demons than she had imagined.
When she meets Blake Tyler, the famous movie star she’s secretly crushed on for years, she thinks her attempt to rebuild her life may just be on the right track. However, the past and the present seem to be conspiring against her and happiness may be harder to achieve than she thinks.

  1. How did you come up with idea and what was your inspiration to write it?

Hmmm… I guess it was one night when my husband and I were watching The Voice, and I said to him something like, “Other than you, I think Blake Shelton is the hottest man on Earth!”. So I wanted to write a book with a hero who looks like Blake Shelton! Added to that, he’s a celebrity, and I thought it might be fun and great research to write (and imagine) a novel about the life of a simple woman who becomes a celebrity, basically overnight. I tried to imagine what it would be like to be always in the spotlight, surrounded by scandal and paparazzi, how one could live a quiet life and fall in love in a Hollywood glamorous setting.

Another fun fact about Celebrity is that’s inspired by one of my previous novels, The Diary. To me, that is such a powerful book I would love to see it turned into a movie one day, and Celebrity includes how I imagined The Diary would come to life on screen. To entice readers’ curiosity further, I’ve included an excerpt from The Diary on the last pages of Celebrity, which will be released on November 7th and will be at 99 cents until then.

  1. Since I’ve read your novel THE DIARY as well, would you like to have it as a movie as well? If yes, can you tell us whom would you like to be casted as Hunter and Selena?

Yes, it’s one of my biggest dreams to see The Diary on screen, because I really think it would make a great movie. I haven’t really thought about a movie cast, but I guess my first choice for Hunter would be Chris Pratt, and I could imagine Jennifer Lawrence playing Serena. And, after seeing Caitriona Balfe’s stellar performance in Outlander, I would love to have her play Countess Elizabeth Báthory.

  1. Would you want to be involved into recording of a movie just like our heroine, Kendra, is?

Absolutely! I have no doubt that will happen one day, especially since The Diary is only the first book in a series I’m planning, which features Serena’s and Hunter’s further adventures (this is the first time I mention this secret plan in public!) 🙂

  1. At the end, do you have any message for the readers that have never read any of your works?

First of all, I want to congratulate anyone who is a reader and lover of books. That, alone, makes you special. And I would be honored if you tried not just one, but more of my books, because the fun thing about a new author is you never know what to expect. 😉

I would like to thank Melinda for sending the book my way for an honest review and also, for accepting doing the interview with me.

The Job Blower

Author: Melinda de Ross
Genre: Romance, chicklit
Pages: 166
Camilla Jackson is an ordinary young woman with an extraordinary knack for attracting disaster. When she is fired from her job as a secretary at a law firm, she realizes she has no idea what she wants to do next. Every job she does land ends up tragi-comically.
But when she meets the drop-dead-gorgeous journalist, Carter Evans, her life seems to brighten. Until she discovers that he hides some very deep and painful scars.
It remains to be seen if she will be able to help him heal and, in the process, find her own path in life. That is, if she manages to overcome her accident prone nature, which gets her into serious trouble…
THE JOB BLOWER is a lighthearted, laugh-out-loud Romantic Comedy, the kind of book that you will keep in your bookshelf and reread to brighten your days and spice up your nights.

Review:
I am back with yet another review of Melinda’s books. I just couldn’t miss the opportunity to be the first one to actually get e-book version of this book because it sounded so funny. And trust me, when you give me funny, romance and chick lit book, I’m all about it. Knowing Melinda’s writing style, I knew I won’t regret it.
The book starts off with Camilla getting fired for something she did yet again. Oh well, being in your 20s, living on your own and losing a job is never a good combo. So she tried to find any job possible (and I mean any). Even if she has some success, she blows every job.
On the other hand, she meets Carter. Oh yes, that sexy Carter (hey, at least he looks sexy in my eyes/mind). They meet by accident but them falling in love is not accident. He helps her to deal with herself a lot as much as she helps him fall in love again and open up himself. I would love to tell you more about how they got close but I don’t think I could do it without spoiling a book and that’s something I wouldn’t like to do.
As much as this is a chick lit book to me it wasn’t like the usual ones. I don’t know, Melinda has some kind of effect on me that her books always keep me turning the pages (hell, I’ve read this book in like 2 and half hours and on my E-reader app it had around 280 pages). Her characters are well written and well detailed and you just meet them through the book. It is not like she gives you everything you will find out about the character all at once. You get hooked with the characters and their life and just the way they are. You get the know the characters slowly as if you are meeting an actual person. Which is what I really like. I like to get to know the character slowly, it feels like I’m meeting a friend. At least, that’s what I like about the books. What I also like about the way she is writing her characters is, you are not able to predict their moves and what they are going to do next. When I’m able to predict things, it just ruins everything for me.
Now, don’t think that there is huge action happening on the each freaking page as in; oh my god, they are travelling somewhere, they are having sex or something else. No, there is something else that keeps your eyes and mind on the book. I think that it is how Melinda is making characters so real life. Yes, there are some typical bookish elements but somehow and sometimes you are able to feel like it can happen to any person out there. It just keeps you going.
My last thoughts are that Melinda should have a lot more readers than she already has. She deserves it, trust me. So if you are looking for the new summer read or you like chicklit and romance genre in general, try out with this book. I don’t think you will regret it.
